Holy well in Ballynarry

Porthaw holy well is covered by a large boulder on the N face of which is a wheeled cross carved in relief. It is situated at the foot of Crockacashel on the foreshore. The holy well at Ballynarry is associated with Saint Fachtna, a 6th-century Irish monk and hermit known for his ascetic practices and healing miracles. Traditionally, the well was visited for its supposed curative properties, particularly for eye ailments and general healing, with pilgrims often making offerings or performing rituals at the site.
