Bullaun stone in Rusheens West

In the garden of a house. A flat-based, roughly circular stone (0.5m x 0.56m; D 0.2m) with a shallow central circular hollow (0.38m x 0.45m) in its upper surface. The relatively large size of the central hollow leaves a narrow raised rim of stone on its perimeter with a gently rounded profile, part of which is chipped away. The provenance of the stone is unknown. There is another bullaun stone (MA073-042----) 170m to W and an ecclesiastical enclosure (MA073-011001-) is 125m to NW. Likely dating to the early medieval period, the Bullaun stone in Rusheens West is thought to have been used for ritual or Christian purposes, such as the preparation of holy water or as a baptismal font. Such stones often held spiritual significance and were sometimes associated with local saints or folklore.
