Bullaun stone in Rath More (magunihy By., Rathmore Ed)

In the S half of an ecclesiastical enclosure (KE068-006001-). A roughly rectangular stone (L 1.4m; Wth 0.8m; H 0.45m) with three bowl-shaped hollows on its upper surface. The largest hollow (0.45m x 0.3m; D 0.3m) is at the W end; the second hollow (0.27m x 0.25m; D 0.12m) is to the E of the latter; a third hollow (diam. 0.2m; D 0.04m) is at the E end. Likely dating to the early Christian period, bullaun stones were often associated with monastic sites and may have been used for ritual purification or as holy water basins. They are sometimes linked to local folklore involving saints or healing traditions.
