Bullaun stone in Inis Oírr is an oval granite slab with a shallow depression, set into the ground beside the doorway of Cill Ghobnait. People may have knelt there, pressed their bodies against the stone, or marked it during rites that no longer have a name. The second bullaun lying near the leacht suggests the place held more than one kind of prayer.
This oval granite bullaun (0.65m x 0.5m) is embedded in the ground just outside and to the S of the doorway of the church known locally as Cill Ghobnait (GA120-002001-). There is a depression (0.35m x 0.27) on the visible surface (information from Dr J. Waddell). Another similar bullaun (GA120-002005-) is lying on the ground to the NW of a leacht (GA120-002009-). Likely dating to the early Christian period (5th–9th centuries AD), the bullaun stone may have been used for ritual purposes, such as the preparation of holy water or as a pilgrim stone associated with Saint Cuan (Cill Ghobnait). Such stones often held spiritual significance and were linked to local Christian traditions and folklore.
