Bullaun stone in Inchagoill

This is one of three bullauns (see also GA040-013006- and GA040-013007-) noted on Inchagoill by Killanin and Duignan (1962, 170). It is located inside the W doorway of ‘Templenaneeve’ (GA040-013004-) and consists of an irregular stone (L 0.8m; Wth 0.4m; H 0.21m) which is embedded in the ground. Likely dating to the early Christian period, bullaun stones were often used for ritual or ecclesiastical purposes, such as anointing or symbolic purification. This example, positioned near a doorway, may have had a protective or ceremonial function in a religious context.
