Bullaun stone in Englishtown

According to Power (1952, 152) the 'Chapel Field' at Englishtown was so called because of a Penal church. The field is still known (WA023-047001-), and a conglomerate bullaun stone (dims. 0.6m x 0.5m; H 0.4m) with a single basin and a shallow scooped-out feature is kept nearby (WA023-078----). Likely dating to the early medieval period, the bullaun stone may have been used for ritual purposes, such as anvil stones for blessing metal objects or as part of Christian ecclesiastical practice. Local tradition sometimes associates such stones with holy sites or penal churches.
