Bullaun stone in Derrintinny

Not marked on any OS ed. Large rough block of sandstone (H 0.38m; max. dim. 0.55m) with a bell-shaped bullaun (D 0.45m; Wth 0.45m) in its upper surface. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). Likely dating to the early medieval period, the bullaun stone may have been used for ritual purposes, such as the preparation of holy water or as a Christian pilgrimage site. Similar stones are often associated with local folklore and saintly traditions.
