Building in Howth

A site assessment directly west of 'Abbey Cottage' which is the western portion of the priests' house associated with St Mary's Abbey, Howth revealed the north-west angle of an earlier stone structure. This comprised two courses of quoin stones overlying a more crudely constructed foundation layer. The dressing on the stone indicated a 16th-century date. As this structure and the gable wall of Abbey Cottage observe the same line, it appears that this may have been the original gable of Abbey Cottage which was rebuilt c. 90m to the east, probably during the 19th century (Meenan 1995).
