Brendan McGill was born in Dublin on 22 May 1981, the starting point for a wandering football life that crossed from Sunderland to Carlisle, Gretna, Bohemians, Barrow, Drogheda United and Shelbourne. He flew wide like a winger should, scoring for Carlisle and Drogheda while surviving the sudden collapse of Gretna and the quiet rejections of clubs that stopped wanting him. Dublin gave him birth, but the road gave him shape, turning one young Irish man into a player who kept returning wherever the game still had room for him.
