Breandán Breathnach

Birthplace

What is recorded here

Breandán Breathnach was born in the Liberties of Dublin on 1 April 1912, the son of a silk weaver and the nephew of a Piper's Club man. He learned the uilleann pipes from John Potts, William Andrews and Leo Rowsome, then spent decades pulling seven thousand tunes out of forgetting before he died in 1985. His Ceol Rince na hÉireann volumes gave those tunes back to the world, and they are still played because he refused to let them vanish.

Why this person is known: Irish uilleann piper and music collector (1912-1985)
