Borthwick Castle rose in 1430 as a massive U-shaped keep for Sir William Borthwick, its thick walls guarding a steep Midlothian ledge. Decades later, Isobel Lindsay used that same strength to trap the Earl of Bothwell until her husband returned, turning a marital rescue into a political weapon. Mary, Queen of Scots, later fled the castle disguised as a male page while Bothwell vanished into the night, leaving behind a stone witness to love, betrayal and royal desperation.
