Bolane Castle is a ruined Gothic tower house perched on a rock above the Maigue valley in County Limerick, built in the late fifteenth century and passed through several families before the FitzGerald line held it into the 1650s. Its surviving southwest corner still rises four storeys of well-cut limestone, while the east wall has collapsed into the valley below. Inside, a spiral staircase once corkscrewed upward beside angle-slits and gunloops, forcing anyone who climbed it to expose their right side to arrows. The castle does not pretend to be whole; it shows what violence and time did to a house that was also a home.
