This brown commemorative plaque records: The Blue Coat Boy. This statue marks the site of Basingstoke's Blue Coat School 1659-1879. It was cast from an original located at Reading's Blue Coat School. Both were founded by Richard Aldworth a governor & benefactor of Christ's Hospital (the original Blue Coast School) Recorded plaque organisation: Basingstoke Heritage Society.
Richard Aldworth was a wealthy wool merchant and benefactor who established Blue Coat Schools in Basingstoke and Reading, providing education for poor children, thus leaving a lasting impact on local educational history.
