Blackwood Castle is a 16th century tower house in County Kildare, rebuilt in 1584 by Pyers and Elinor Fitzgerald of Ballyshannon. Its upper storeys were removed and the stones carried to Coill Dubh, leaving a two-storey red sandstone box beside the Slate River. The lobby, guardroom, musket loops and drawbar socket still show how the building resisted invasion, while ivy swallows the staircase and hides what the upper chamber held.
