Mnemo knows the bivallate rath in Ballykennedy because she walked its twin ditches at eleven, age seven, while children elsewhere learned letters. She dropped a marble into the inner gap and heard it return changed, sounding like a man named Tom calling her back. The marbles never came back ordinary. Some became black, some warm, some marked with lines no child could have drawn. Tom never appeared, but every marble that entered the rath gave one fact back: a name, a date, or a warning.
