What is recorded here
Black Abbey in the Ards was a Benedictine house where a thirteenth-century coffin lid still lies buried beneath the grass. The monastery belonged to the medieval period and remains scheduled, meaning the land itself is still marked as worthy of protection. Whatever prayers were spoken there have faded, but the stone and soil remember the shape of the chamber.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as BENEDICTINE ABBEY & C13TH COFFIN LID: BLACK ABBEY or ST. ANDREW'S in the ARDS. Recorded period: MEDIEVAL. Recorded protection: Scheduled.
