Belfast City Cemetery opened in 1869 as one of the oldest public burial grounds in the city, holding the ashes of shipbuilders, suffragists and wartime soldiers. The Poor Ground still contains over 80,000 unmarked graves, while a Victorian underground wall once separated Protestant and Catholic deaths. Five hundred and seventy Commonwealth servicemen and women from both World Wars rest there, making it the largest such site in Northern Ireland.
