Bawn in Rathnageeragh

Bawn

What is recorded here

Mortimer Castle in Rathnageeragh, County Carlow, still shows a raised bawn extending east then south from the main block, bounded by old fosse cuts. That much is clear. The life inside it has thinned to rumor: footsteps on damp stone, a door pulled shut against rain, a child learning the shape of the yard before knowing its name.
Courtyard of castle (CW020-004001-) visible as slightly raised platform (H c. 0.5m) extending E from the main block and then S. Defined by a fosse on the N and E sides. (JRSAI 1894, 280; JRSAI 1987, 29) Compiled by: Claire Breen Date of upload: 19 August 2011
