Bawn in Kilnamanagh — Report the wrong picture

Kilnamanagh in County Dublin once held a bawn, but no wall still stands above ground to mark the line. What remains is a ghost in the description: rough square stones, no mortar, a rude boundary around a castle that has itself vanished. The land may still carry the shape of that enclosure even though the eye no longer finds it.

The OS Letters describe a wall 'built on the ruins of an ancient wall around Kilnamanagh castle' (ed. O'Flanagan ed. 1927, 33(63). According to the report it was of 'very rude and rough appearance'; 'the stones (were) square, oblong lime quarry stones, lying irregularly without any old mortar'. This may have been the remains of a bawn. There are no visible remains above ground. Compiled by Geraldine Stout

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
