What is recorded here

Balleny holds a battle site from 1649, when armed men clashed in County Down during the turbulent seventeenth century. The exact layout has faded, but the date remains sharp: young soldiers, horses, and frightened civilians crossed that land at once. What is lost is the sound of the fight and the reason each man gave for charging. The ground keeps the shape of the event even when the names have leaked away.

The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as BATTLE SITE, 1649. Recorded period: C17TH; POST-MED. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
