On 2 May 1565, Shane O'Neill crushed the MacDonald of Dunnyveg in County Antrim, breaking a Scottish alliance that threatened his hold over Ulster. He had marched two thousand men through the dense Killultagh wood in a single week, cutting a road six men wide to arrive before reinforcements could gather. The victory removed a rival power from the eastern coast and demonstrated to England that Shane controlled the north.
