On 16 June 1642, Sir Felim O'Neill drove six thousand Confederate soldiers into the fertile Laggan Valley, only to collide with Sir Robert Stewart's two thousand Laggan Army fighters. The smaller force broke the larger charge, inflictng five hundred casualties and forcing a retreat that stripped the invaders of momentum. Glenmaquin became the place where ordinary settlers, armed for self-defence, proved they could withstand a professional army.
Battle of Glenmaquin is a battle in County Donegal, Ireland.
