On 10 September 1315, Edward Bruce and his Irish allies broke Richard Og de Burgh's depleted army at Tannybrake, capturing William de Burgh and forcing the survivors into Carrickfergus Castle. Bruce had already stripped de Burgh of his Connacht allies through clever diplomacy, sending rival kings home to defend their own thrones before the battle began. The victory gave Bruce winter supplies and consolidated his hold in Ulster, though the campaign would eventually collapse at Faughart.
