Two thousand three hundred men under Robert Stewart broke the Ulster Army at Clones on 13 June 1643, killing or wounding one hundred and fifty of Owen Roe O'Neill's troops while losing twenty-nine. The larger, better-drilled Laggan Army simply overwhelmed the smaller force, ending O'Neill's hope of reversing Ulster's fortunes before winter.
