A local battle during the Wars of the Roses, the Battle of Blore Heath (A.D. 1459) was fought between the Yorkist forces led by Sir Ralph Neville and the Lancastrian army under Lord Grey of Ruthin. The Yorkists won a decisive victory, which delayed Lancastrian efforts to capture Yorkist strongholds in the north and demonstrated the effectiveness of disciplined archery.
