Aughinish Island’s northern tip still holds a solid oval tower built around 1810. The tidal lagoon to its south turned water into a moat, while the narrow spit left no easy route for anyone coming without being seen. That is the shape of the defence: not a grand fortress, but a small stubborn point of stone at the edge of the sea.

Listed as 'Martello Tower' on the RMP (1996). Situated on a narrow spit of land at the most northerly point of Aughinish Island with a tidal lagoon defending it along the S. A well-built, roughly oval Martello tower (dims. c. 20m NE-SW; c. 17m NW-SE), built c. 1810, with a doorway 2.4m above ground level on the SE side and windows at first-floor level at WNW, N and NE. The tower is in use as a house with a flat glass roof, cut stone chimney stacks and an external metal stairs. Timber casement windows and a matchboard door have replaced the originals.
