St Baldred's Chapel on Bass Rock is associated with St Baldred, an 8th-century Irish monk and hermit who is said to have lived on the island and was later martyred there by pagan Vikings. The site is linked to early Christian tradition in Scotland, and the surrounding area is steeped in folklore, including tales of the chapel's use as a place of prayer and pilgrimage.
