Bass Castle stands as a ruined wall on Bass Rock, where a lighthouse now casts its beam through the same stones that housed a hermitage and a prison. The Lauder family held the isolated rock for centuries before the Crown took it, forcing desperate men to eat fish dropped by sea birds during wartime. James VI himself walked those cliffs in 1581, offering purchase to George Lauder only to be refused by a man who valued the rock's stubborn freedom more than royal gold.
