The National Heritage List for England records Barwick in Elmet large univallate hillfort and motte and bailey castle as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The motte and bailey castle at Barwick in Elmet was likely built in the 11th or 12th century, possibly by a local lord or Norman authority following the conquest of 1066. It is important as a rare surviving example of a combined hillfort and medieval castle, illustrating continuity of strategic site use from the Iron Age through the medieval period.
