Barrow

Located about 150m E of KE042-138----, this site consists of a bank and internal fosse enclosing a low central mound, with opposed entrances to E and W, the overall diameter being c. 18 to 19m. Stones have been quarried from the interior (local information) and the mound, once probably circular, now measures c. 7.4m N-S x 10m E-W. The fosse is shallow, varying in depth from .1 to .3m and in width from .5 to 1.5m. For a short stretch to S the bank is represented only by a scarp falling .75m to the exterior, but it reaches a maximum internal height of 1.15m immediately N of the E entrance. Along the N portion of the bank, for a distance of 8m, the external face, here .25m high, is revetted with low drystone walling. The entrance gaps measure 2.25m and 2m wide respectively. There are no clearly defined causeways across the fosse, but the recent disturbance could have obscured these features if they formerly existed. The above description is derived from J. A ring-barrow, likely dating to the Early Christian or medieval period, possibly associated with a burial or territorial marker; its opposed entrances and fosse suggest ritual or defensive significance.
