Barrow

Barrow, ring-barrow

What is recorded here

Situated on a S-facing slope of rising ground in a mountainous area with nearby ringfort (TN031-016) to the N. Only the S half of the ring-barrow survives and this consists of a semicircular mound (diam. 12m E-W) enclosed by a fosse (Wth 1.3m) and an external bank (Wth 2.3m) with a causewayed entrance (Wth 2.3m) at S. A field fence bisects the site on an E-W axis. The remainder of the site to the N of the field fence is not visible at ground level. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 September 2008
Ring-barrow, likely dating to the Early Bronze Age. Its partial survival and association with a nearby ringfort suggest its significance as a funerary and possibly territorial marker in a prehistoric landscape.
