Barrow

Barrow, mound barrow

What is recorded here

Ten metres of raised earth still circle inside the middle ringfort, though late nineteenth-century hands broke the mound and scattered whatever truth it hid. The barrow has watched the fort grow and change, keeping its own quiet shape while people forgot what they buried or marked there. It is not easy to find, but it remains patient, waiting for someone to stop measuring and listen to the soil remember.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 10 July 2007 Circular area defined by earthen bank (diam. c. 10m). Situated between outer and middle banks of ringfort (ME031-033016-). Disturbed in late nineteenth century. (TRIA 1837, 195; Macalister 1931, 33-4, 40-2)
A Neolithic mound barrow; associated with the broader Tara landscape, significant as part of an early ritual and burial complex.
