Barrow

In pasture, crowns the top of a low rise, in an area of undulating grassland with an expanse of wet land to NE. Views are good but not extensive. A circular area (diam. 10-11m) defined by an earthen bank (Wth c. 2-2.6m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.4m). The broad, seamless inward slump of the bank produces the impression of a slightly concave interior. The bank is largely sod-covered but appears to be composed of stony earth, incorporating large stones in parts. There is a degraded section/break (Wth c. 2m) at SSE. Grass-covered, with a single hawthorn at NE. A mound barrow (MA093-012002-) is located slightly downslope c. 20m to W, and there is a standing stone (MA093-011002-) on a prominent ridge 550m to W. Neolithic embanked barrow, dating to the 4th–3rd millennium BCE. Such barrows are significant as early ritual and burial monuments, reflecting communal activity and social organisation in prehistoric Ireland.
