Barrow

On SE facing slope in reclaimed pasture 600m E of the summit of Derk Hill (OD 781 ft.) and 165m E of a stream that marks the townland boundary with Knockderk. Fields enclosed by drainage ditches associated with estate belonging to Derk House located 600m to NE. One of a cluster of 14 barrows (LI033-036001/009-; LI033-090/91-; LI033-121-122----; LI033-154----) concentrated in the S half of Derk townland with the closest (LI033-036002-) 12m to the SSE. Not depicted on OSi maps. Surveyed by the ASI in 2007 and described as a oval-shaped area (dims. 6m N-S; 4m E-W) enclosed by a shallow fosse (Wth 3.4m-4.2m; D 0.15m-0.17m) and a low bank (Wth 3.9m; int. H 0.15m; ext. H 0.15) from NE-WSW. Possible causeway (Wth 1.3m) at SSW. Linear depression running N-S 30m to E is one of a number of similar drainage ditches in surrounding fields. Monument visible as a faint cropmark on OSi orthophotos taken 2005-2012 and on Google Earth orthoimage dated 18/11/2018. A Neolithic ditch barrow; its location suggests it may be part of a broader prehistoric landscape associated with early agricultural activity and burial practices in the region.
