Barnsdale Castle Crannog is an archaeological place in Angus, Scotland. A crannog is a built island, often wood and earth, raised above freshwater so people could live, store, or hide when land became dangerous. If that is what this was, then the castle part is not arrogance but memory: someone wanted the place to be recognised as a home under pressure. The water would have done the rest, blocking carts, hiding doors, and making departure require a boat.
