Finavon Castle stands as a ruined tower house beside the River South Esk, where a 1600 structure leans against older medieval walls. The Crawford family lived there until extravagance forced a sale in 1625, leaving behind a dovecot with 2400 nesting boxes and a hillfort above. Ladies may have spun tapestry in private bowers while men hunted, filling the stones with ordinary joy before decay took them.
