Banff, the Palace of Banff

Palace (medieval)(possible)

What is recorded here

Aberdeenshire still hides a possible medieval palace called Banff, though no standing wall or dated chamber survives to prove the claim. The name suggests a residence grand enough to be called a palace, yet the evidence remains so thin that even its certainty must be doubted. What is left is a ghost in a list, a palace that may never have existed beyond the imagination of the man who first wrote it down.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Banff, the Palace of Banff as Palace (medieval)(possible). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
The Palace of Banff was a medieval residence associated with the Earls of Banff, later the Earls of Mar, and dates to at least the 13th century. It is remembered as part of the historic and noble heritage of northeast Scotland, reflecting the region's strategic and political significance during the medieval period.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
