Castle Street still marks the line where Banff Castle kept its distance from ordinary life. The enclosing walls stood between the town and the castle, drawing a border that could be seen before it was understood. They no longer stand complete, but the street name preserves the shape of that division.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Banff, Castle Street, Banff Castle and Old Castle, Enclosing Walls as Wall (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Banff Castle was originally built in the 13th century, with later expansions by the Gordon family in the 16th century. It is important as a historic stronghold associated with the Earls of Huntly and as a symbol of medieval power in the Banff area.
