Balnagown Castle, Kitchen Garden occupies a thirty-metre square beside the castle in Ross and Cromarty, preserving the Post Medieval boundary when households still measured wealth in living green rather than gold. The castle likely stood above ordinary want, yet this separate garden suggests people valued the pleasure of growing food as much as the pride of stone walls.
