Balnagown Castle, including its Italian Garden, was built by the Mackenzie family, who held the estate from the 16th century, with significant 18th-century renovations. The castle and its formal gardens are remembered for their historical association with the prominent Clan Mackenzie and as an example of Scottish landscape design influenced by Italian Renaissance styles.
