Ballytarsna Fort

On a low but prominent hillock in rough pasture, marsh and scrub, with extensive views except where impeded by higher ground to NNE. Hachured and labelled 'Ballytarsna Fort' on the first edition (1942) and later, Cassini edition (1920) of the OS 6-inch map, both of which also record a natural spring c. 10m to the N of the monument. No visible surfaces traces of this enclosure, a probable rath, survive. However, the oval-shaped hillock (28m NW-SE; 14m SE-NW; H 2-5m) is surrounded by a broad, dense band (Wth 10-15m) of rushes and reeds, which may be evidence of an infilled outer fosse. On the hillock's round-topped summit is an oval-shaped depression (8m E-W; 5m N-S; D 1m) which is partly overgrown at E, and part of the hillock's overgrown SE edge has been dug away. Ballytarsna Fort is a ringfort situated on a low, prominent hillock, likely dating to the early medieval period. It is associated with local folklore surrounding fairy activity, common to many such sites in Ireland.
