Ballycahill Castle lies in scattered ruins on a flat-topped mound above the upland, its stones confused by time but still commanding extensive views across North Tipperary. The mound may have begun as a motte, meaning the castle stood on older defences and layered memory. Whoever built there chose height and visibility, forcing travellers to see the stronghold before it became invisible to them.

Situated on high ground in an upland area with extensive views. The scattered and confused fallen masonry of a castle on top of a circular flat-topped mound (TN020-084002-) which may have been a motte.
