Ballone Castle, Cnoc Dubh

Cist(s) (prehistoric)

What is recorded here

Ballone Castle, Cnoc Dubh, is a prehistoric cist hidden in the Highland landscape, not a true castle at all. The name misleads because people imagined walls and chambers where the truth is simpler: a burial place from before written history. The real wonder is that the dead were laid beneath soil long before kings built stone, and the land still keeps that older secret.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Ballone Castle, Cnoc Dubh as Cist(s) (prehistoric). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
