Mound and moat mark the old castle abandoned in 1390, while the 1808 mansion still stands beside the loch. Buchanan took stone from the ruined walls to build his own house, erasing the earlier castle but giving Balloch a new shape. The old site remains protected, and the new castle became a country park inside the national park.
