Babiker Awadalla died in County Dublin, Ireland, on 17 January 2019 at age 101 after serving as Sudan's seventh Prime Minister during Gaafar Nimeiry's rise to power. He had broken from judicial office in 1967 to defend constitutional rights, joined the May 1969 coup as its only civilian leader, and warned the world that outside support for Israel might draw the Middle East into nuclear war. A centenarian in exile, he carried the weight of Sudanese politics into a foreign room, where old age and distance finally quieted him.
