Auchinleck Castle was a medieval stronghold on a steep rocky outcrop above the Lugar Water, occupied by the Stewart family in the 13th century and later held by the Auchinleck and Boswell lines before falling into ruin by the 17th century. Its entrance bridge spanned a man-made ditch, and a tower with a several-metre drop guarded the crossing, making the place difficult to take by force. When the old castle was abandoned and a new tower house raised, the rocky outcrop kept its shape like a forgotten guard, still watching the water and the land beyond.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Auchinleck Castle as Bridge (period Unassigned), Castle (medieval), House (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Auchinleck Castle was built by the Lindsay family in the 13th century and later held by the Earls of Crawford. It is remembered as a significant medieval stronghold in Ayrshire and as the birthplace of King Robert the Bruce's second wife, Isabella of Mar.
