Arthur Acheson, born near Markethill in County Armagh around 1744, rose from Scottish descent to become the first Earl of Gosford. He represented Old Leighlin in Parliament and governed County Armagh during the violent disturbances of 1795, where he openly condemned Protestant extremists for targeting Roman Catholics with confiscation and banishment. His life bridged local Irish politics and national power, ending only when death took him in Bath in 1807.
