Brodick Castle on Arran kept a separate guardhouse beside its main doors, a small violent room where men watched the entrance long after medieval walls stopped being enough. The possibility of that building is not decoration; it is the shape of fear made brick. Someone stood inside at night, listening for boats or betrayals, while the castle slept above.
