Armorial plaque in Clonagh (cadamstown Ed)

Armorial plaque

What is recorded here

The 1578 stone of John Lye has vanished from the world, leaving behind only a written shadow. It may have been buried under a new kitchen floor, stolen by a curious child, or chipped into gravel for a lane. Mary Ennis lived beside it, perhaps taking it for granted as a porch support or a boundary marker. The castle it recorded is gone, the house is gone, and the plaque is gone, but the act of building remains trapped in the lost inscription.
O'Leary (1896-99, 137) describes and sketches a slightly damaged rectangular stone (dims. H c. 0.75m; Wth c. 0.43m) which bears the coat of arms of John Lye, a date of 1578 and a fragmentary inscription, 'IHON. LY BILDED THIS T… ' which, he says, records the erection of a castle (KD003-017----). He states that the stone is, 'built into the porch of the thatched dwelling house of Mary Ennis, hard by'. It has not been located. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011
