Armorial plaque in Bansha West

On the northern corner turret of the main front façade of the 19th-century Bansha Castle, between first and second floor level. The limestone plaque has been inserted into a later moulded surround. The shield is decorated in raised relief with the chief indented and a bendlet sinister with five escallops. Beneath which, in a row from dexter to sinister, are two covered cups and a jug, which is a variation of the more usual three covered cups of the Butlers. The base of the shield is slightly damaged. Above the shield is carved 'Edmonde Butlere', the 'E' being executed in an elborate interlace stlye. This may refer to Edmond Butler of Rathbrit, second sone of John Butler of Derryluskan, second son of James, ninth Baron of Dunboyne who was dead by 1600 (pers. comm. Gerard Crotty).
